TRIGGER WARNING: rape and details of physical abuse.
This Saturday electro-pop group Cold Cave will play at the Todd P-owned DIY venue 285 Kent in Williamsburg. The show quickly sold out, but after tickets went on sale Cold Cave announced their opener would be the pro-fascist musician Boyd Rice.
Along with Death in June and NSBM, Rice owes his recent success not to his artistic merit, but by the shock value employed in his imagery and statements. One essay promotes rape and the violent oppression of women. In a photo shoot he posed with a member of Nazi Skinhead gang American Front, and he dressed in full Nazi-garb to shoot the shit about white supremacy in an interview with American white-Supremacist Tom Metzger. While he claims these were stunts, in straight interviews he continuously voices his sympathy with the right wing.
Rice is not just a scumbag in rhetoric, but in practice as well. In her memoirs Rice’s ex-wife Lisa Crystal Carver aka Lisa Suckdog, writes about his emotional and physical abuse that she survived during their marriage. Here is one passage: “Boyd strangled me and threw me against walls and bashed my head against the futon frame, [finally he] released his hands from my neck and stood up, dazed, like a big, stupid oaf and smacked his lips with the satisfaction of having given in to impulse”.
Now venues are dropping Cold Cave/Rice shows left and right, usually at great expense. Shows have been cancelled in Philadelphia, Montreal, and now Boston. It’s not that Rice isn’t a financially viable draw, but that he is a liability, both to the venue’s reputation, and possibly to the physical venue itself—a smoke bomb interrupted his set in Chicago.
The strange thing is Rice plays all the time. Why the backlash now? Maybe people are finally getting fed-up with the nonchalance in which fascist imagery is seeping into countercultural music scenes. Rice playing a DIY venue in Williamsburg seems harmless, but the recent ubiquity of fascist logos such as the S.S. Totenkopf, Wolfsangel, the Black Sun, and multiple types Odinist symbols—all used to promote Occidentalism and White Pride instead of thoughtful study of history, semiotics and mythology—are signs of counterculture’s growing drift towards apolitics or the right.
